Newberry Animal Hospital is closely monitoring the recent developments of coronavirus (COVID-19). Should a local outbreak occur, we have a response plan in place to ensure continued medical care of your four-legged family members.

Can I give my pet COVID-19?It would be highly unlikely for you to give your pet COVID-19. One dog in Hong Kong belonging to a person diagnosed with COVID-19 has tested weak positive for the COVID-19 virus. This dog has not shown any clinical signs of the virus and is being closely monitored.

If I am sick with COVID-19. Should I avoid contact with my pet?The CDC recommends that you should restrict contact with pets while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people. If possible, have another family member care for the pet and avoid snuggling, petting and sharing food with your pet while you are sick. As always, wash your hands before and after interacting with your pet.

What can I do to prepare my pet for a local outbreak?We recommend keeping at least two weeks of your pet's food and medications on hand and including your pet in any family emergency planning.

Can my pet give me COVID-19?No. Both the CDC and World Health Organization report that there is no evidence that a pet can spread COVID-19.
